My father’s family lived in Hilgay for many generations. My mother was a Southery girl originally, but her family moved to Ten Mile Bank. My paternal grandfather perished in WWI, when my father was about three: my maternal grandfather owned and ran the bakery in Hilgay. He was a lovely man and I have many fond memories, but I wanted to know more about the grandfather I never knew…
This led down many paths, one of which was to research the names of all those commemorated on the two village war memorials.
We will remember them.
